Amplid Cholesterone 2009

Amplid Cholesterone 2009

Available in two variants, a "rocker" design reversed camber or a traditional flex pattern. The RC, "reverse camber" is the most modern in conception, easier to get around, more versatile and that effective shorter running length on any harder snow makes life easier with skis at 126 mm at the waist – in fact after a few runs on these you will be walking like John Wayne.

I know most of the young guys in my ski town love the Amplid flex patterns – progressive, forgiving yet still relatively stable. The Cholesterone’s in either variant are gonna take you large in the powder no matter if you’re an old-schooler like me who doesn’t see the point in riding switch or a new-school switch dieu.

skireviews.co.uk rating: Fatter than most "mall bound Americans" and it is that large it could probably even float them above the powder – better in the hands of slicker, rippin’ back-country jibbers though.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Cholesterone 2009:

Amplid Cholesterone Skis RC 2009

Amplid Cholesterone RC 2009

Available in two variants, a “reversed camber”, the RC, or a traditional flex pattern.

The RC is my choice and the most modern in their conception. Rockering makes a ski easier to get around, more versatile and the effective shorter running length on firm snow makes life easier – with skis at 126 mm at the waist that’s an advantage. 126 mm is a lot, you’ll be walking like an extra from a Western after a few runs; whilst edge-to-edge action is something you can take a nap in-between as a ski this large takes a while to lumber from one side to the next.

I know most of the young guys in my ski town love the Amplid flex patterns, and will be stoked to be riding these next season – progressive, forgiving yet still relatively stable as they may be. The Cholesterone’s in either variant are designed and are gonna’ take you large in the powder no matter if you’re an old-schooler, like me, who doesn’t see the point in riding switch, or a new-school switch maestro.

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

Fatter than most “mall bound” Americans – the Cholesterone’s are large and could probably even float a 300 lb-er in the powder – better in the hands of slicker, rippin’ back-country jibbers though.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Cholesterone RC 2009:

„The Cholsterone & Cholesterone R.C.”
BACKCOUNTRY JIBBING TO THE MAX

Imagine two riders, skiing opposite corners of europe. Submitting shape concepts
that converge into one common idea. Cooked raw and fat by frenchman Mati
Imbert and norwegian viking Cato Laegreid, this “ski” is meant to jib the bc like
there’s no tomorrow. Taking off switch from huge cornices, landing either way in 3ft
of fresh. Riding up tree logs for a better view, or just impressing chicks with the
irresistible power of… Cholesterone.
Now available in two flavors: Classic and Reverse Camber, but only one
(super)size 🙂
Cato Laegreid’s rider’s quote: Hey man i wanna be on top of the snow after hitting
that windlip. With the chol’ you can ride out every single powpow landing. bomb
holes are from the past.
Mati Imbert’s rider’s quote: I dig the way parkskis handle but i am a powder
addicted. the Cholesterone helped me out of this identity crisis!

Amplid Teddy Bare 2009

Amplid Teddy Bare 2009

Big, 136 – 107 – 136 and available in a 183 or 191 length. If these figures don’t mean much to you then you should be looking elsewhere, this is a ski about dimensions. Apt to take on the biggest back-country hucks and the freshest, deepest of tracks, the Teddy Bare is a bling ski for bling skiers. Leading edge back-country freestyle design and technology for big days, big hair and rad lines.

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

Blockbusting back-country blingsters for the flipsters, spinmeisters and swicth powder riders out there.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Teddy Bare 2009:

„The Teddy Driver“ – BIG MOUNTAINS, BIG DROPS

Technical Freestyle tricks, combined with sick lines – out in the big-mountain
universe is Teddy Berr’s home.
People who’ve seen Teddy perform at contests or in films know his aggressive, yet
elegant riding style.
The 23 year old half-german, half-american Amplid Research Cartel member has
designed the right tool for his perception of new-school skiing. A 107mm waist fat
ski with a big, smooth nose radius, for just the right floatation in deep pow.
Teddy’s rider’s quote:
I like to be naked in front of people i care for.

Amplid Milo 2009

Amplid Milo 2009

Large “universal shredders.” Amplid’s kinda “all-mountain” ski for girls. Stylish and certainly aimed at freeskiing but I think you’d definitely be happier in the back-country with these babies opposed to attempting to “shred” a line on firm East Coast boiler-plate or European ice early in the season.
A great ski for the dedicated freerider and for when the conditions are great – you will be shredded alive though by someone on a regular pair of skis on a regular groomed run – but hey that’s not where Amplid is aiming their “Universal” ski.

Not my choice for obliterating “untouched corduroy” but a fine freeride powder ski and as they are so light you could pop a touring binding on for some great back-country fun with a real pair of skis.

skireviews.co.uk rating: An awesome pair of womens freeskis, happiest in the deep, tolerable on the groomed but perhaps not quite “universal” at 95 mm underfoot!

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Milo 2009:

„The Milo“ – WOMEN’S UNIVERSAL SHRED

This Venus might not hang at the Louvre, but that’s the only compromise she’ll
make. With specifically adapted female geometry, the Milo excels in variable
conditions, whether riding untracked freshies, getting air off kickers, or carving
untouched corduroy.
The biax-glass construction handles up well at higher speeds, yet it’s still torsionally
soft enough to be pleasantly forgiving. Gold metallic surface details add a little
extra style.
Märta Ahrenstedt’s rider’s quote:
For backcountry kickers or just cruising through the untracked – the Milo is my first
choice outside the park or the pipe.

Lengths: 169
Widths: 128 / 95 / 118

Retail Price: EUR 549.-

Amplid Township 2009

Amplid Township 2009

The flagship freestyle model from Amplid. Funky urban graphics, solid construction and a wide, 84 mm platform to stomp the rails whether on snow or at your local “Mall” – thankfully we don’t have too much of the later in Europe just yet!

If rumbling around the Park is your thing then the Township is the toughest and most versatile weapon of choice in terms of park and rail abuse – for a more “skiers” orientated ski then I prefer the sounds of the C7.

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

Pure freestyle urban amplification.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Township 2009:

The Township“ – URBAN AMBUSH EQUIPMENT

From the parks at Les2Alps and Hemsedal, to the rails of downtown Stockholm and
Salt Lake City, the “TS” has done it all. Built for ultra-tough urban style riding, it’s
designed to deal with everything from asphalt flatters to handrail landings.
With a slightly narrower waist and stubbier tips than the Antidogma, the Township
is a super-nimble spinning tool. The graphics from our ARC artists communicate
exactly what it’s made for.
Tom Wallisch’s rider’s quote:
Ultrapop for ollies, extremely stable fgoing off big kickers, holds all the flat asphalt
landings during town performance.

Amplid Infradark Skis 2009

Amplid Infradark 2009

Lightweight = agility and less fatigue. Shedding the pounds is what Amplid aimed to do with the Infradark. Adding the pounds is what it did to the price though, this pair of skis is coming in at an incredible £700 or €859 a pair!! And that is a lot of money for a ski that you are likely to trash pretty quickly in the powder.

Dimensions are as large as the price, 136 – 107 – 126, and two lengths are available, a nimble 183 or a smooth running 191 – personally I really enjoy the longer lengths when the space is available – they just feel so much more fluid and calm. Either way I think at this price you should be giving ’em a test drive first.

skireviews.co.uk rating: Slick carbon-rich freeride skis with all the float in the world, but you may need to sink your wallet to buy ’em.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Infradark 2009:

„The Infradark“ – SPACE AGE CARBON TECHNOLOGY

New geometry, rounded tail, and still one of the lightest fat skis on the market. Our
Amplid Helio Core, home-grown carbon fibre, and other things we won’t talk about,
prepare the Infradark for your big-mountain exploits.
It handles with amazing ease while riding, and is a pleasure to carry on the climb
up.
Borrowing the same shape Mr. Berr approves for his “Teddy”, along with some
extra ARC black magic technology, this alien work of art is truly a new benchmark.
Anian Thrainer’s rider’s quote: Building light skis is not a challange. building’em
light, durable and rideable, without the carbon typical sketchy characteristics, this is
what the infrablack is all about

Lengths: 191 / 183

Amplid Infrapearl 2009

Amplid Infrapearl 2009

Not having tested this ski but having taken a seat when regarding the price I hope this is one hell of a ski. It looks the part, the finish of the Infrapearl is gorgeous and the dimensions are perfect for the expert female skier who spends her days ripping up the back-country. A 95 mm waist is about perfect for modern freeride skiing and the “Ultralight” wood-core keeps the fatigue down yet you on the top your game.

With 129 – 95 – 118 dimensions powder and spring snow are going to be a joy, the tailored women’s flex feels firm but not too rigid that the Infrapearl would be trying to ski for a long duration.

A great looking, well-built and purposeful expert to pro level freeride girls ski – gorgeous.

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Infrapearl 2009:

„The Infrawhite“ – WOMEN’S ALLMOUNTAIN ULTRALIGHT

One of the lightest women’s all-mountain skis on the market.1600gr.
The 95mm waist makes the Infrapearl a formidable tool for cruising the un-tracked,
or just shredding on-piste.
Tapping into our all biax- carbon construction, it’s a featherweight wonder for
handling in tight trees, in the air, or just in your hands while hiking. Pearlcolour
effects, a titanium laser-engraved aluminum plate, and the unique see through
topsheet window set this ski apart as a thing of beauty.

Amplid C7 Skis 2009

Amplid C7 2009

Stiffer, more focused and built for speed – well in freestyle! Which for someone of my years, I was born in the ’70’s (the horror, the horror) strikes the fear of someones God into me. So when Amplid say their pro-riders are looking at hitting kickers at 50 mph I will leave it to them to do the ski testing.

Again Amplid provide a very specific ski for the “new school” generation, or is it “post-new-school” these days? Anyhow I do get the feeling that even traditional skiers could get away skiing with the C7 as it combines a reasonable sidecut, 121-80-108 and a stiffer flex which is ideal for allmountain cruising, even if your limit is a 3′ off a bump smaller than a “Page 3 models breast.”

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

More versatility, more power and a better all-mountain freestyle ski for the expert skier.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid C7 2009:

„The C7” – TITANIUM ALLOY GOES FREESTYLE

Hauling switch at 50mph. Cutting a perfect arc over a freshly groomed knoll.
Building momentum to spin a 5, then embarking on a centrifugal journey.
Twin-tip park geometry, blended with titanium-alloy and biax-glass.
Then crank up the radius beyond what you’d expect (14,94m @ 175). The C7 sets
a standard which truly didn’t exist until now!
Anian Thrainer’s rider’s quote:
I dig speed. but when the park is closed, fresh corduroy at full speed can get
boring. Except when you ride switch all day…

Amplid Antidogma Skis 2009

Amplid Antidogma 2009

Cool graphics and inspired construction give you a very focused freestyle ride in the Antidogma. Although the dimensions may lead you to think of a decent, if modern, freeride/freeski, the Antidogma is built pretty much for kicker-tastic days in the back-country or park.
86 mm is plenty for stomping landing in or out of the park, the flex is not only designed to handle heavy impacts but they are very tolerant, Amplid was only gained in popularity with their Freestyle specific rides throughout last season and the Antidogma looks likely to help develop their success.

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a versatile, specific park to backcountry freestyle ski.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Antidogma 2009:

„The Antidogma“ – Futuristic Freestyle Precision.

Skiing gets reinvented daily, and so do skis. The Antidogma is the ultimate
expression of this phenomenon. Rails, kickers, pipe – take your pick. Go off
anything, and enjoy the air! A specially developed freestyle flex curve provides
every bit of pop you need. Spinning might seem effortless, thanks reduced swingweight
from our TPU Spin Tips. Enough waist for that early morning backcountry
kicker, and super durable biax-glass construction to survive big rail disasters.
Abuse Base Technology, your friend in the fight against rail bites.
*Abuse Base Technology :The metal grid coating behind the sintered Hyper
Dense Base® III distributes and subsequently lowers the heat occuring from the
grind impact. The cooler base material therefore, allows the elements to quickly
return to their original state. Heat deformation is history.
Pako Benguerell’s rider’s quote:
I “consumed” lots of skis especially during the summer camps, when the boxes get
hot from the sun. I’ve been riding the abuse tech for the past 6 months now. No
abrasion visible!

Amplid Allure Skis 2009

Amplid Allure 2009

Very funky and very attractive, even alluring. Maybe some of the more established manufacturers need to wake up to Amplid fresh designs and purposeful constructions. The Allure may be aimed squarely at female riders but this ain’t a pussy of a ski, this is a full-blown park animal with every bit of hardy technology you need to tear it up in the Park.

The technical features noted by Amplid are numerous and impressive. A full wood-core, reinforced edges and “shred ready pretuning” for the rails – am guessing that means removing pretty much all the sharpness from the edge.

Personally I love the Amplid range for 2009 and I think they have developed by leaps and bounds – the Allure though, as they are in the same vain as the Township, are just too Park focused for my kinda riding, both are ideal for real Park rats who dream of little more than transcending gravity.

skireviews.co.uk rating: n/a

Pure Park performance in a great package of aesthetics, durability and performance.

The manufacturer says this about the Amplid Allure 2009:

„The Allure“ – FEMALE PARK ATTACK

Baked in the moulds of our Township series, this little sister definitely has Allure.
A bit softer, both torsionally and in longitudinal flex, as it should be for a specialized
girls park ski.
Biax-glass construction makes for a very smooth and easy ride.
But don’t worry, it’s quite adept on rails and jumps, and the ultralight tips make
spinning a joy. Don’t be surprised when some of the guys get jealous.
Märta Ahrenstedt’s rider’s quote:
Pipe & park, X-games or worldcup, the allure is the perfect ski for me. Forgiving,
but incredible ollie pop in the tail.

Lengths: 162 / 69
